The most effective way to stifle democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: activist judges, human rights tribunals, parliamentary committees, civil service bureaucrats and political party hacks.

Sometimes you post to FD and get strange results, such as if you decide to enter an 08:00 PM or have a list with items

8) is the next followed by
18) which is the last

To solve this problem, click on the box beside 'disable smilies' just above the 'submit' button.

With 'smilies disabled, the text now reads:

One last item for today, I promise. It is the use of superscripts:

You can then write: The 12th of May, or E2

"knowledgable one" lives less than an hour away - why not invite him over to your place for a cup of coffee the next time he comes to the big city?

I'm sure that a 1/2 hour of someone sitting beside your computer showing you what to do is more valuable than 10 hours of reading tips,...

Of course. Use a PM to let me know where your trouble is and I will fix when I am next on the forum.

There are a number of good HTML primers on the Internet, but most are too complex to help in posting on FD.

Tips and tricks posted here are just those that can help in posting on FD. Highlighting text and using the BBCode button above the text entry window combined with a few HTML tricks give you powerful posting tools.

You can use this thread to post questions and I will try to answer if I can or other members may have solutions to your problems. FD members have a lot of talents as a group.

My thanks again too Boss!

Knowing all the gimmicks may make posting more fun, and certainly easier to format.

Haven't seriously played at all the tricks yet, but when time allows...

West Viking:

While you're at it, could you explain for a forum newbie like me what these features do for messaging:

[code]
[list]
[list=]
Close Tags

And please explain under what circumstances one would want to disable HTML, BBCode or Smilies "in this post". It may be obvious to all but me.

WestViking wrote:When you have a long URL to post, such as:

http: //www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20040
512/FILL12/TPNational/Canada (I intentionally altered the URL to fit the forum page)

you may find that the right page margin is 'pushed' outward giving you a wide page that has to be scrolled from left to right for reading.

To fix the problem, first ensure that HTML is enabled in your posing (look on the posting page just above the "submit" button, and code in the URL as follows:

<a href=http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20040
512/FILL12/TPNational/Canada>STORY HERE</a>

I have highlighted the HTML coding in red for easy readability. Type in plain text.

What you will see on the posted page is: STORY HERE with the URL embedded in the words, so a click of the mouse on the words takes a reader to the linked story.

You have 30 minutes to edit your post if you make a mistake.

HTML has been disabled in this post to allow you to see how a long URL can be posted without breaking the right margin.

I always wondered how that was done.
