From Got Questions.Org -Question: "What does it mean to 'spare the rod, spoil the child'?"

Answer: The phrase “spare the rod, spoil the child” comes from Proverbs 13:24, “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” The Lord uses discipline to reveal our sin to us. This is also how parents reveal the truth of our need for a Savior to their children. When a child does not feel the consequence of his sin, he will not understand that sin requires punishment. The Lord provides a way to salvation and forgiveness through Jesus, but that means little to those who do not see their sin.

Furthermore, correction shows us that we are not above reproach and that we are accountable for our actions. Our natural pride blinds us to our need for a Savior, and discipline reveals the truth of our wretchedness (Revelation 3:17). Since salvation is the most important choice the child will ever make, it is imperative that parents are leading them to Christ, and discipline is critical to this process. Proverbs 23:13 says, “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.” In the context of verse 13-14, “die” means spiritual death of hell. Children who respect authority and feel sorrow for their sin are much more likely to ask Jesus to forgive them and be saved.

All children are born sinful (Romans 5:12-19). Their natural self is destructive and unrighteous. That does not mean they aren’t infinitely valuable and worthy of love (Psalm 127:3). It means that they are not born with any natural “goodness” in them. That is why all children need discipline. Proverbs 22:15 says “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.” Discipline is critical for wisdom (Proverbs 29:15), and a child who obeys his parents will be wise (Proverbs 13:1). And even adults who do not heed correction will feel the consequences of their foolishness (Proverbs 10:13).

Some people believe in discipline, but not in physical discipline such as spanking. However, the Bible is the final word on what is truth; it is not mere opinion or theory. The word “rod” indicates a thin stick or switch that can be used to give a small amount of physical pain with no lasting physical injury. A child should never be bruised, injured, or cut by a physical correction. The Bible warns that parents should never abuse the power and authority they have over their children while they are young because it provokes the children to righteous anger (Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21). Physical discipline is always done in love, never as a vent to the parent’s frustration. It is also just one part of discipline and should be used when the child shows defiance to a clear limit, not in the heat of the moment.

God instructs parents to parent their children the way He parents His children. Hebrews 12:5-11 tells us that God disciplines those whom He loves to perfect their righteousness. God only disciplines His own, which proves that Christians are His beloved children. Notice that David says that the Lord’s rod comforts him in his time of trouble (Psalm 23:4).

Finally, we know that no discipline feels good while it is happening, but afterwards the rewards are rich (Hebrews 12:11). Godly character, fruit of the spirit, and peace are rewards of God’s discipline. The same is true for our human children. Children who have learned how to take responsibility for their actions are much happier people (Proverbs 3:11-18). The importance of the rod of correction is that it steers the heart of a child toward Jesus and forgiveness of sin He offers. When parents trust God’s methods over their own, they will see the blessings for their children and themselves.

1 Cor. 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
Heb. 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

The Lord teaches it, is He despicable to you too?

Pro 13:24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.

The Lord says you hate your children then.

I do not hate my kids, promise.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IQNSpd8 ... e=youtu.be is a good video outlining a different perspective on those verses.

I stopped listening 2 + minutes in when first he uses a non literal translation NLT which is a dynamic equivalent translation not a word for word literal translation and then he has the gall to say the word "rod" is not in the original text. The word rod is in the original text and this guy proves early on he doesn't know what he is talking about.

Rod - shebet - used 190 times in OT as "rod"

7626 [e]
ḇə·ṭōw
שִׁ֭בְטוֹ
his rod

shebet: rod, staff, club, scepter, tribe
Original Word: שָׁ֫בֶט
Part of Speech: Noun Masculine

Proverbs 13:24
BIB: חוֹשֵׂ֣ךְ שִׁ֭בְטוֹ שׂוֹנֵ֣א בְנ֑וֹ
NAS: He who withholds his rod hates
KJV: He that spareth his rod hateth
INT: withholds his rod hates his son
Transliteration: shebet

Does not this guy and those like him call God a liar? Is God wrong when He says, Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.... ?

You said the teaching that God teaches is despicable and then deny that is actually what God says in His word, my response is a little leaven spoils the batch of dough.

Here is someone who teaches on this based on what the word of God actually teaches not what someone wants it to teach. Give it a spin huh.

Two letters to the editor written in response to a Wisconsin judge outrageously sentencing a pastor to two years in prison for preaching the Bible standard on disciplining a child.

Dear Editor,

Dane County Judge Maryann Sumi sentenced Pastor Philip Caminiti to 2 years in prison for preaching the standard of God Almighty as spelled out in the scriptures. This unjust judge swung her judicial gavel at God and the clear teachings of the Bible on how to love one’s children: “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.” (Proverbs 13:24). Judge Sumi called it conspiracy to commit child abuse. God calls it loving your child. Judge Sumi doesn’t get to overrule the God who created her.

The command from God is “in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.” (Leviticus 19:15) Judge Sumi has perversely judged God. God Almighty has a bigger gavel & it will fall on the heads of all Wisconsinites for her egregious error. The people of Wisconsin need to make their voice of opposition heard against this judge & crooked Assistant District Attorney Shelly Rusch (who asked for 5 years in prison for Caminiti).

In this decision, Judge Sumi quashed the First Amendment (freedom of speech & religion) – the crowning jewel of our constitution: the selfsame constitution she swore an oath to God to uphold. Shame on Judge Maryann Sumi. She clearly wasn’t spanked enough as a child.

Governor Scott Walker should stand up and pardon Pastor Philip Caminiti. He should publicly chide Judge Sumi for her flagrant trampling of the First Amendment. Westboro Baptist Church will reiterate this position when we picket this judge and the Wisconsin State Capitol in the near future.

Hey, Wisconsin! The First Amendment gives American citizens the right to believe and speak as their conscience dictates

— Letter To The Editor June 3, 2012

This is another letter to the editor written in response to a Wisconsin judge outrageously sentencing a pastor to two years in prison for preaching the Bible standard on disciplining a child.

Dear Editor,

Wisconsin’s motto is “Forward,” but “Froward” (perverse; contrary) is more truthful.

Wisconsin’s frowardness was displayed when a Dane County jury found a preacher guilty of conspiracy to commit child abuse for preaching what the Bible says about properly disciplining children. Hey, Wisconsin! God says, “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.” (Proverbs 13:24) That standard won’t change, no matter how many God-hating jurors say otherwise.

Wisconsin’s frowardness was displayed when a profane judge sentenced that preacher to two years in prison for simply preaching what the Bible says. Hey, Wisconsin! The First Amendment gives American citizens the right to believe and speak as their conscience dictates – and no goofy judge or jury can abridge these rights.

God warned against Wisconsin’s idea of good child-rearing: “The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.” (Proverbs 29:15) Imprisoning a pastor for preaching Bible redounds to Wisconsin’s everlasting shame. Governor Walker should immediately pardon this preacher, victim of an anti-God, anti-American judge and jury.

This judge and the state capitol need to be reminded : Wisconsin’s hatred of God’s standards doesn’t change them. Fear and obey Him.
