Not everyone in Canada is looking forward to hosting royal newlyweds.

“What a waste of public funds,” Amir Khadir, a Québec Solidaire member of the province’s National Assembly, said in an interview with the Journal de Québec on the upcoming tour of recently wedded Prince William and Kate.

“All this to welcome these parasites!”

Mr. Khadir, an outspoken politician whose remarks have put him in the spotlight before, deplored the expenditure of public funds on the couple’s visit – their first international foray since their wedding last month.

“If we were welcoming someone because he had extraordinary ideas or had done remarkable things, I’d like that,” the newspaper quotes him as saying. “But to do this with someone who has blue blood, whose sole merit is his ancestry, that bothers me.”

William and Kate plan to visit Montreal and Quebec City July 2 and 3, after spending Canada Day in Ottawa.

Quebec’s Minister of Foreign Relations and Minister of La Francophonie, Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, welcomed their visit, which is already garnering the attention of dozens of international journalists seeking accreditation for the tour. She said the province would cover part of the cost of their tour, although she didn’t specify the exact amount. She called the visit a chance to put the belle province on display.

But some groups have already planned anti-monarchist demonstrations for their brief Quebec visit: Réseau de résistance du Québécois and Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste have both planned to turn out. Hundreds of anti-monarchist protesters greeted Prince Charles during his 2009 visit to Quebec.

Amir Khadir - yep, a real quebecois name

Sorry, did my ethnic snide betray itself?

Let me get this straight - this province wants to be a 'country', yet it can find ways to piss off tourists visiting here on their honeymoon? Oh yeah - that's a great start to nationhood (to me, it's more of being in childhood)

Amir Khadir is a douche bag.

He should return to his native Iran and shut his lousy mouth before talking about how money is spent in my country on the monarchy.

Yes, that's right but I guess the journalist who wrote this story didn't think why this idiot MNA has been in the news before was relevant.

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/canada ... story.html

The fact that the idiot that's spouting off about the Royals is also a guy who thinks it's okay to interfere with someone's private business and ability to make a living due to their own demented politics, is something that I think should take away any credibility this guy has as someone who claims he's standing up for taxpayers.

If William's ancestor, King George III had not assented to the Quebec Act, 1774, Quebec would not be a French-speaking mainly Catholic Canadian province using the civil code for other than criminal matters. Quebec's failure to successfully promote the French language and culture within its borders without draconian laws that infringe on the human and charter rights and freedoms of its citizens is appalling. One would think that after 237 years of special accommodations, Quebec could survive without $ billions annually in financial and linguistic supports from the other nine provinces. The province of Quebec is a failed francophone experiment that has become too expensive for Canada to sustain.
The most effective way to stifle democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: activist judges, human rights tribunals, parliamentary committees, civil service bureaucrats and political party hacks.

I find it normal that he spoke like a politician when he got caught. Like Hollywood used to say - "(he) speak with forked tongue"

They are parasites. The couple is likable and those aren't words I'd use if I were a public personality. But, come on, we're paying for their sojourn (yeah, yeah, I know, they're our soon to be heads of state and all that... and something about tourist dollars, which is a economically dubious). Nice couple. Historically important institution. Now, not so much.

I'm a lazy rebublican who can't be bothered to get mad. But the fact is the word choice was accurate. I challenge anyone to say it's verbally wrong to refer to them as parasites. They are.

That aside, I wish them well. It's likely harder to be them than it is to be me. But, the woman did choose the life....
