Attacking Gabby Douglas’s Faith? Really?

Postby Narrow Back » 08/ 07/ 12 8:57 pm

(This original article is tagged "Free Speech". I chose the Religion forum. I think both are right)

Gabby Douglas is being denied a fundamental right to express herself spiritually without censure or mockery - a line has been crossed.

If this isn't enough, these so-called progressives found time to criticize her HAIR! Her HAIR! My God.

Gabby Douglas' Mom Slams Criticism Over Daughter's Hair

[...] "How ignorant is it of people to comment on her hair and she still has more competitions to go?" Hawkins fumed to Fashionista.com on Monday. "Are you TRYING to ruin her self confidence?"

Attacking Gabby Douglas’s Faith? Really?

It’s a sad commentary on modern life when I heard an exuberant 16-year-old thank God for the greatest success she might ever attain and immediately thought, “Someone’s going to attack her.” As surely as the night follows day, here comes Salon.com:

As a Christian myself (albeit one of those really freaky papist kinds), I’ve often wondered what it is about Christians like Douglas that unnerves me so. The closest I’ve been able to figure it is that Douglas and her ilk seem to espouse a faith based on what is commonly referred to as “The God of Parking Spaces.” It’s the deity that grants wishes to those who ask nicely. Douglas is a girl who has described God as the figure who’s “waking me up every morning and keeping me safe in the gym every day.” She told People Thursday, “I was on the bus and it was raining and I thought, ‘It’s going to be a great day.’ My mom used to tell me when I was little, ‘When it rains, it’s God’s manifestation, a big day’s waiting to happen.’ I texted my mom, ‘It’s raining. You know what that means.’ It means that Russian girl is going down, I guess.

Thank you, Salon, for that oh-so-snarky takedown of a triumphant teenager. What makes it even worse, of course, is that Gabby’s life has hardly been full of sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns before this moment. She’s known more fear and heartbreak than the average teenager. Her father’s an NCO in the Air Force, and her parents are divorcing under the strain of multiple deployments:

The pressure to perform to the best of her abilities without her father by her side was at times too much for ‘The Flying Squirrel.’

While living with her coach in Iowa, Gabby would often wake up with anxiety about her father at war.

She would rush to her computer and try to contact him on Skype.

‘[I] Just had bad days in the gym, thinking about my dad,’ she said to NBC before the Olympics.

‘I’m just like “Whoa, what if he doesn’t come back (from Iraq)?” I was just horrified. I prayed every night.’

While Gabby gave most Americans a moment of joy last week, her family has been sacrificing in deep and profound ways far, far from the spotlight and far from Salon’s condescending “tolerance.” Had Salon done its homework, it would have seen that Gabby does not in fact simply pray to the “God of Parking Spaces” but instead to the God who watches over a father at war, to a God who provides comfort in the midst of family heartbreak, and yes to a God who gives good gifts to His Children including — very rarely — an Olympic Gold Medal.

If the writers at Salon can’t watch a child thank her Lord and Creator for a great day — maybe even her greatest day — without sniping at her faith, perhaps they are the ones who need to grow up.

There's a major hate-on for this amazing young girl.

It's puzzling, I wonder if it's because she's black.

For someone to excel at anything is contrary to the socialist concept. Socialists will add vinegar to the finest wine and then wonder why they do not enjoy the meal.
The most effective way to stifle democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: activist judges, human rights tribunals, parliamentary committees, civil service bureaucrats and political party hacks.

This is despicable. This amazing young woman deserves her day in the sun without the sniping from petty losers.

I'd be interested to know if the woman who wrote this article knew about Gabby Douglas's father being in the military before she penned this tripe. I suppose it shouldn't make a difference but it does make it particularly egregious considering that any adult with an ounce of empathy should be able to understand the kind of apprehension and worry a young person might carry with a parent in the military.

It certainly is a mystery DA but I don't think it's because she's black. Apparently even Oprah has gotten in on the hair controversy.

She is hated because she is a Christian, has traditional values and represents everything the left says that young black girls cannot and in some instances should not be.

I agree that she is a remarkable and delightful young woman. Rational America is proud of her, the liberal haters want her to go away.

She is hated because she is a Christian, has traditional values and represents verything the kleft says that young black girls cannot and in some instances should not be.

I agree that she is a remarkable and delightful young woman. Rational America is proud of her, the liberal haters want her to go away.

True. Any woman who publicly declares Christian values will be hated. Likewise any black man. If "victims" don't pay homage to their "betters", they'll get torn apart.

But aren't most gymnasts from Christian families? My impression is that it was a more popular sport in small-town America. Maybe that's wrong.

I had a hard time reading the Oprah article. It read like a stream of consciousness from someone with ADHD.

I think richardson nails it. A lot of liberals are pro-Black as long as Blacks are downtrodden.

It has nothing to do with downtrodden, but whether the blacks and women are liberals / Democrat. Liberals back under-talented, privileged liberal blacks and women who can be portrayed as downtrodden so as to advance their career or take down a conservative, perhaps a black conservative, in the process.

Not for one second do I believe this was intentional but I do find it "a teachable moment". It reminds me of "Maslow's Hammer". Maslow once wrote: "I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail."

NBC, MONKEY COMMERCIALS AND SELECTIVE EDITING

NBC was forced to apologize as cries of racism were leveled against the network after airing an ad featuring a monkey seconds after African American Olympian Gabby Douglas won the gold for gymnastics. This is amusing seeing as how the same network selectively edited a recording in order to make Floridian George Zimmerman appear to be a racist.
NBC ended up in the middle of a "race storm" when it went to a commercial break during which an ad for the new sitcom Animal Practice featuring a monkey appeared on Olympics watcher's screens.
Cries of racism immediately rang out as some assumed that the inopportune ad placement was some purposeful act of racism.

NBC was stunned by the accusations and rushed to apologize for any misconceptions and assured viewers that "no offense was intended" by the ad.

This attempt to make NBC out to be racist is amusing because the network itself tried to make someone else out to be a racist back in March. Then NBC selectively edited George Zimmerman's 911 call in order to make him seem like a racist.

Back in March NBC edited out parts of Zimmerman's 911 call after the shooting, taking out the parts where the dispatcher asked Zimmerman what race Trayvon Martin was, leaving the impression that Zimmerman volunteered that "he looks black" as if race was what Zimmerman was focused upon.
Of course, it really is absurd to call NBC racist for airing the commercial after Douglas won the gold. There is no way that the network could have so easily chosen an ad to air on the spur of the moment like that. Commercials are scheduled quite some time before they are aired so no one was sitting in the NBC studios picking monkey commercials as commentary on Gabby Douglas!

Still, NBC tried to make Zimmerman out to be a racist hunting down blacks for the kill despite that he wasn’t and now here NBC is in the same position of being falsely accused of being racists.

Deserts richly deserved.
