O Kebek: Sovereigntist group unveils anthem for Quebec

MONTREAL — The Societe St. Jean Baptiste of Montreal has unveiled a new anthem for Quebec.

"O Kebek" was written and sung by the well-known Quebec singer and poet Raoul Duguay, best known for his anthem "La Bitt à Tibi" and his longtime support for a sovereign Quebec.

In 1995, during the run-up to the referendum on sovereignty, Duguay wrote the poem "Trente Lettres" in which he compared Canada to a father, and Quebec to a mother that was never given an orgasm.

The lyrics to his latest oeuvre, O Kebek, evoke the pride of French Quebecers in their language, and in the shorter version emphasize that language is culture.

I'm sure the group is funded by the feds, and used Canadian tax dollars to pay for the song.

Great song. Murray McLauchlan's Greatest Hits CD is actually really good.

Coming back from Montana I came up the Cowboy Trail #22 and went past Ian Tyson's ranch at Longview where he runs shorthorns. One can always stop and say hi at Ian Tyson's Navajo Mug in Longview. Tyson wrote Four Strong Winds, which Neil Young has been more celebrated performing. It IS most certainly Alberta's anthem. A few of us went to see Neil Young in Edmonton and the roof came down when it began.

Thanks to volunteering with music organizations over the years I have shaken the hand of Stan Rogers, Neil Young, both Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Murray McLauglin and Gordon Lightfoot and many more. I don't think I can say one thing that isn't nice about all these folks. They were an absolute pleasure to meet.

I've met Ian Tyson a few times, the first time at the IGA store in Claresholm, Alberta. I met Gordon Lightfoot in Ontario when he was the award presenter at a DCI (Drum Corp) show when I was a teen up from the dirty old USA. I haven't met the others. I'm a huge fan of all of them. I'd like to meet Murray McLauglin and I'd like to shake Gordon Lightfoot's hand one more time. Ian Tyson is easy if in the west country.

I have very fond memories of Murry McLauglin back stage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival spending time with some of the teen volunteers. He took the time to urge them to pursue their musical interests. A lot of people wouldn't have taken the time but he did and they were thrilled and still talked about their conversation years later.

Much like Gordon Lightfoot when I was 15 years old in 1975. I'd never been to Ontario in my life. I'd never been away from my family that long in my life. (7 weeks on the DCI tour) He spent an evening with musically gifted kids and greeted everyone. I've always had a soft spot for him.

Four Strong winds live in Edmonton - you can hear 18,000 people singing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC3nOaA9 ... re=related
