Insecurity and fear keep the herd in line...Constance and Mark have determined that the price of being herd members would be loss of personal respect and a dull existence.

Differentiating by action one's raison d'etre is a compliment or insult to oneself. Both C&M have heaped praise on themselves silently by their actions.
