New Features - Thread Kicker and Digg

Postby Connie Fournier » 03/ 05/ 08 10:36 am

There are two new features on FD as of this morning.

Digg

You will see a Digg button beside each post. If you are a member of Digg (many bloggers are), you can click that button and "Digg" the post. Then other Digg members will be able to find the post and read it.

The idea is to Digg posts that are good and original that you want lots of people to see. The more Diggs a post has, the higher it is placed on the Digg site.

Thread Kicker

This feature allows administrators and moderators to kick users from individual threads (topics). People who start threads may also kick anyone except administrators and moderators, but only if the administrator allows them these powers. Everyone has these powers to start, but they will be removed from people who abuse them. Users are kicked/unkicked by clicking the appropiate image next to their posts.

- Any user can kick anyone from a thread, but only if they started the thread.
- Normal users cannot kick administrators and moderators - they can never be kicked.
- If a user is kicked by an administrator, then moderators and users cannot unkick that user.
- If a user is kicked by a moderator, only administrators and moderators can unkick that user.
- If a user is kicked by a normal user (thread starter), anyone can unkick them.
- When a user gets kicked from a thread, their posts remain.
- Users are informed if they are kicked from a thread and are told who kicked them.
- Admins can kick anyone.

Post here if you find any bugs. Enjoy!

I think this is a good move toward greater free speech. The thread starter will have more control over their own thread. If someone comes along and they are stalking them or they are hijacking the thread they can simply kick the person from the thread and that person can go start their own thread.

It will be important for us to adopt forum etiquette that says that, in most circumstances, the thread starter should be allowed to decide who is bumped from their thread.

Any person can be overruled by a mod or admin, and kicking privileges can be lost if they are abused.

I remember signing up when it first started but have never used it.

If it's necessary that I remember what password I used then it's as good as useless to me. I can't remember what I had for breakfast never mind another password.

Edited to change the word sighing to signing.

Would it not be a good plan to make this a sticky so that it's easy to find when posters have questions about how it works.

Are there rules about kicking? For instance, let's suppose we start a thread about same-sex marriage? Can we kick obnoxious social liberals out of the thread?

It seems that this threadkicking thing can lead to abuse.

However, it seems very interesting. I'd love to be able to kick off the obnoxious out of threads I start.

If you start a thread and you want to kick people who are being obnoxious, that will be your right. If they want to start their own thread, they are perfectly free to do so.

I think most FDers are willing to debate the issues, so I don't think this will be abused. The people who routinely kick people from their threads will pay the price of having threads that continually die.

As you know Connie I am a news thread junky.

There are many threads that I start that there is no way that I could keep track of endless pages and would expect that if someone is not playing nice on a thread that I start posters can feel free to PM me with the offending links and I'll look into it.

That's the only way I can think of to keep track unless you have another idea.
