The system was shut down after a disgruntled user implied administration was secretly accessing and reading PMs. Rather than leave ourselves open to accusations that are impossible to disprove, we have decided that a note on the private message submission form informing posters that PMs are accessible to administrators is the simplest way to deal with this problem.
As FD administrators we have neither the time nor the inclination to read private messages users send to one another, but private messages are stored in unencrypted form on the server.
