Strippers to be stripped of work visas: Kenney

OTTAWA - With the passage of its massive budget Bill C-38, the government says it will end giving work visas to foreign strippers once and for all.

In Opposition, Stephen Harper was against a Liberal program that effectively expedited work permits for foreigners intending to work in the adult entertainment industry.

Though the Conservatives trashed that program soon after taking office, roughly 100 of those visas have been renewed each year since 2006.

"The problem is, under the current Immigration Act we don't have the legal authority to deny people visas based on the industry they're working in," Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenney said. "Now we have the power, which we'll begin using as soon as those regulations are done this summer, to deny visas to people who we think ... might have a high chance of trafficking or exploitation."

Together with other legislation passed this year, provisions under Bill C-38 will take it one step further -- all existing temporary work visas to foreign-born strippers will be cancelled, all new applications will be denied and all "open" work visa holders will be barred from working in the adult entertainment industry.

Asked if this could result in mass deportations, an immigration ministry spokesperson said, "We don't comment on hypotheticals."

Strippers vow not to take these changes lying down.

Tim Lambrinos, president of the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada, is considering challenging the legislation, saying it will only drive these women to work underground.

"When I say 'exotic' what do you think of?" he asked. "Foreign, right? Non-indigenous. That's the kind of entertainment people want to see."

As far as I know strippers are legal in Canada so why do this? Didn't they say that there is no bad jobs?

This scam industry is a cover for human trafficking (slavery) and should be shut down.

:hurray: :hurray: Once again the Conservative Gov't is slowly unravelling the Liberal insanity that has been foisted upon us for many years. :hurray: :hurray:

I am of the opinion this industry is just that, a front for, and complicit in human trafficking.

The nature of my post is that I consider it a form of prostitution. I was at a wedding stag in Calgary one time where I thought we were going to shoot pool. Yes, technically there were a couple tables there but it was a strip club. There were private show rooms in the back I learned when the boys started pitching in for the fee. Oh boy.

Often this is used as a cover story to bring prostitutes into Canada.

Are these the people we need to to do the jobs Canadians won't do? Or the ones that possess the skills that Canadians don't have?

Seriously though, why do they focus on strippers? They should be crafting legislation to cover all work visas.

No, that would be hookers, who take it lying down, bent over, on their knees or whatever.

If Canadians want to be strippers, then the industry should pay them the going rate rather than importing "cheap labour" (ie. young women from third world countries who are willing to sell their bodies to to make a buck).

That's hitting the nail on the head!! But it just doesn't apply to strippers. It applies to ALL "guest workers".

If an industry is unwilling to pay a wage that attracts the number of workers that it requires, then one of four things are wrong; The compensation package is too low to attract workers, social programs are too rich allowing people to not work while enjoying a satisfactory quality of life, the industry is no longer needed (buggy whips) or imports from other countries are driving down the prices through subsidies (direct or in the form of no social or environmental costs etc......think China pollution). Importing lackeys that are willing to work for peanuts is not the answer.

Ask RD what Timmy's pays near the Oil Patch.

The Guest Worker Program needs to be cancelled.

Should that apply to all employment opportunities or ONLY strippers? It's a bit rich for a guy who loves women as much as Kenny does to be spending this energy on female strippers. Do you think he feels the same way about male strippers...
